Cold and wind test every vehicle
NOAA's 99% winter design temperature for Sioux Falls is −11°F (−16°F at 99.6%). In that cold, a dead battery or a slide into a ditch is a safety emergency, not just an inconvenience. Summer brings wind: during the May 12, 2022 derecho, straight-line winds of 50 to 70 mph were widespread across the region, with measured gusts reaching 107 mph in Tripp. This guide covers both.
Winter breakdowns
- Stay with the vehicle if you slide off the road, unless help is close and you can reach it safely.
- Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow if you run the engine for heat, and run it only in short periods.
- Carry a winter kit: blankets, warm clothing, water, snacks, a flashlight, a phone charger and a shovel.
- Call for help and give your location.
Storm damage
- After a severe storm, check for broken glass, dents from debris and fallen limbs before driving.
- Photograph damage before moving debris.
- Do not drive with a cracked windshield that blocks your view.
Insurance
South Dakota's Division of Insurance says insurance companies must respond to all claim communications within 30 days, though that does not oblige them to pay within that time. It advises photographing damage before repairs where possible, keeping all receipts for temporary repairs, and not making permanent repairs before contacting the insurer. Covering a broken window with plastic is a temporary repair; keep the receipt.
Choosing a shop
You choose where your car is repaired. Ask:
- for a written estimate before work starts;
- that the shop call you before extra work;
- whether parts are new, used or rebuilt;
- what the warranty covers.
Winter maintenance after a breakdown
Cold strains batteries, starters, tires and cooling systems. After a winter breakdown, ask the shop to test the battery and charging system, check coolant protection and look at tires.
Road salt
Rinse salt from the underbody on milder winter days, and ask the shop about rust prevention.
Picking up the car
Compare the invoice to the estimate, ask about each charge, test drive and keep the warranty.
If you disagree with the insurer
You may contact the Division of Insurance if you have a dispute with your insurer about the claim amount or terms.
Records
Keep estimates, invoices, photos and insurance papers together.
Understanding the estimate
Ask the shop to show you the failed part and explain the repair. If an estimate lists several items, ask which are urgent for winter driving and which can wait until spring. For a large repair, a second opinion is reasonable.
Block heaters and remote starters
Engine block heaters help cars start in deep cold. Ask the shop whether your car has one and whether the cord is in good condition.
